Russian clubs in favor of VTB United League and against foreign player limit

VTB United League President Sergey Ivanov met in Moscow with directors of the Russian clubs in the League. Several key questions concerning the regular season club schedule – both the format and system of competition – as well as the limit on foreign players on Russian teams were discussed.

The clubs voted unanimously in favor of competing only in the VTB United League and earning spots in European tournaments via the League. They also agreed that the top Russian team in the VTB United League at the end of the season should be declared the domestic champion. The club directors agreed to meet in the near future to discuss the logistics involved in running the Russian youth team league.

The clubs also voted unanimously to do away with the limit on foreign players. Currently, the rule allows no more than three foreign players to be on the court at one time during games between Russian teams. Next season, the limit will only affect the number of foreigners allowed on the active roster. The exact number to be allowed will be determined by February 10, after each club has an opportunity to express their opinion.
