Late Run Thwarts Kalev Upset Bid
Lokomotiv-Kuban defeated Kalev at home, 71-67. Trailing Kuban by 10 games in the standings, Kalev kept the score close for three quarters, trailing by only three early in the 4th quarter. In danger of dropping a 4th consecutive game, Loko put together a 14-0 run in the final period to secure the win.
Recap
Despite sitting 14th in the standings, Kalev came to compete in Krasnodar, playing Loko's star-studded roster even for 3+ quarters.
The visitors banked on gritty defense from the opening tip, making life miserable for Krasnodar's snipers. Victor Claver was the only Railwayman to find success in the 1st quarter.
On offense, Kalev got the ball inside to center Shawn King. At the end of the opening period, Kalev enjoyed a three-point advantage, which it would ultimately take into halftime (the 2nd quarter ended in a low-scoring 13-13 tie).
Little changed in the 3rd quarter. Kalev continued to neutralize Kuban's high-powered offense. Another field goal from Rolands Freimanis early in the 4th quarter put the visitors on top by three, while Mario Delas made it a four-point lead, 53-49, with 8:48 to play.
After Georgios Bartzokas called a timeout, the Railwaymen finally got going. Ryan Broekhoff, Victor Claver and Chris Singleton combined for a 15-0 run, giving Kuban a 11-point lead with five minutes remaining.
Kalev hung around, cutting the deficit to six with a little over a minute to go, but never truly threatened. Kuban escapes with its 18th win, while the Estonians drop to 7-17.
Star Player
Ryan Broekhoff. One of Lokomotiv's top snipers, Broekhoff struggled early, but caught fire when his team needed him most. The American big man knocked down two 3-pointers early in the 4th quarter to spark Kuban's comeback.
Stat of the Game
45-37 - Tallinn shot better than Loko from the field, but it wasn't enough as the Railwaymen outshot Kalev 9-6 from beyond the arc.
