Randolph Lifts Krasnodar Over CSKA
Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar defeated CSKA Moscow on the road, 94-88. Anthony Randolph won the game for the visitors, knocking down a huge '3' to give Loko the lead in the final minutes. With the victory, Krasnodar snaps CSKA's record 19-game winning streak.
Intro
Two of the league's top teams met on Sunday with both boasting double-digit win streaks (CSKA - 19; Loko - 10).
The Muscovites started the game on an 11-3 run, getting six points under the basket from Joel Freeland. After Georgios Bartzokas called a timeout for the visitors, Lokomotiv gradually got back into the contest. Krasnodar trailed by five at the end of the 1st quarter.
Loko center Anthony Randolph played big in the 2nd quarter, helping his team take the lead several times. CSKA was on top at halftime, but only by three, 43-40.
Neither team could get any momentum in the 3rd quarter. Entering the 4th quarter, Loko trailed by two points, but also had to send Anthony Randolph to the bench with four fouls.
Every possession was huge in the final period. Matt Janning stepped up for the Railwaymen in Randolph's absence. The Loko newcomer hit several big shots, keeping the visitors afloat.
Krasnodar needed every basket. Nando De Colo and Milos Teodosic were on fire for CSKA, making it tough for Lokomotiv to take the lead.
Turning Point
Lokomotiv hung around, finally bringing Randolph back into the game with less than five minutes to play. With a minute and a half left on the clock, the American hit a huge '3', breaking an 80-80 tie. The visitors never trailed the rest of the way. Randolph scored four more points, helping the Railwaymen pick up the win.
Star Player
Anthon Randolph. The versatile big man did everything on the court (even bringing the ball up on offense). Randolph was at his best on offense, scoring a game-high 28, including several huge baskets in the final minutes.
Stat of the Game
3-0 - Randolph's record vs. the Army Men. He won both regular-season meetings last season and proved his significance to the team once again on Sunday.
Quotes
CSKA head coach Dimitris Itoudis:
- Congratulations to Lokomotiv on the win. Our opponents played better today. It turned out to be a very high-level, interesting game. It's relatively difficult to play two intense games in a row and we couldn't handle certain situations. We started well and controlled the tempo, but Loko picked it up in the second half and started connecting from outside. They created opportunities thanks to one-on-one play and our over aggressive help defense. The fact that our opponent made seven of 12 shots in the final quarter says a lot. We learned a good lesson, but we continue to lead in the VTB United League and we'll play better.
Lokomotiv-Kuban head coach Georgios Bartzokas:
- First of all, I think this was a terrific game for the fans. Everyone at the arena today got to enjoy very high-quality basketball from exciting players. Strategically the game was also very interesting. We showed our toughness and won, even though our main players--Broekhoff, Delaney, Randolph and Bykov--got four fouls early, even in the 3rd quarter. Still, no one fouled out. We managed to keep our starters on the court in the big moments, play to our strengths and show that we have a good team. Of course, we shouldn't forget that this was only one good game which brought us a lot of joy today, but there are very tough games ahead. Everything like usual: win or lose, you don't think about it the following day.
