Enisey Comeback Bid Falls Short vs. Avtodor
Avtodor Saratov defeated Enisey in Krasnoyarsk on Sunday, 92-88. The visitors surged ahead in the 2nd quarter and led by as much as 17 early in the 4th quarter. Enisey mounted a furious comeback in the final minutes and even briefly tied the score, but Avtodor would not be denied, snapping a four-game skid in the league.
Intro
The Siberians earned a hard-fought win in the FIBA Europe Cup playoffs earlier in the week and hoped to carry that momentum into Sunday's showdown with Avtodor. Not surprisingly, Enisey began the game with the upper hand, outscoring Avtodor 17-7 in the opening minutes.
Jeremy Chappell led Saratov on the comeback trail, coming off the bench to score 13 in the first half. His team responded, outscoring Enisey 38-15 over a 10-minute stretch.
The home team scored six straight to close out the half, but remained in a seven-point hole at the break (47-40).
Avtodor led by 5-10 points most of the 3rd quarter, entering the final period with a nine-point advantage (75-66).
Enisey got caught napping to start the quarter. Saratov scored eight straight, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Jeff Brooks and Reggie Williams, to take a commanding 17-point lead with 7:22 to play.
Turning Point
Backed into a corner, Krasnoyarsk staged a remarkable comeback. Avtodor only scored four points over the next six and a half minutes and Enisey's Alexey Vzdykhalkin tied the game with a '3' (87-87) with less than a minute to play.
The game was decided on Enisey's final possession. Trailing by two, David Kennedy tried to force overtime with a drive to the basket, but couldn't get his layup to go. Travis Peterson made two free throws at the other end to ice the victory and help the visitors improve to 10-8.
Star Player
Travis Peterson. The American forward showed leadership on the road, scoring inside and out, rebounding and dishing out assists. He also made four clutch free throws in the final minute to preserve the victory.
Stat of the Game
17 - Despite falling short, Enisey put together an impressive comeback, erasing a 17-point deficit in less than seven minutes.
