Recap
Krasny Oktyabr has looked better in recent weeks, signing several new players during early January. But league-leading CSKA entered with a 14-game winning streak and was heavily favored.
The Army Men were playing without Pavel Korobkov and Ivan Lazarev, while Oktyabr was missing January MVP candidate Jerry Jefferson. Jefferson's absence limited Volgograd's options on offense and weakened the frontcourt defense.
From the opening tip, the Army Men smothered Oktyabr's attack, while feeding the ball inside on offense. CSKA led 32-18 at the end of the opening period, thanks to 7-8 shooting inside the arc. During the 2nd quarter, the Steelmen did a better job on defense, but CSKA still managed to expand its lead to 17 at halftime.
CSKA kept rolling in the 3rd quarter, holding Krasny Oktyabr to 12 points. The Muscovites won the period by 14 to seize complete control.
Star Player
Vitaly Fridzon. The CSKA sniper only missed one shot in the game (3-3 from inside the arc, 5-6 from the perimeter), symbolizing his team's brutal efficiency on the court.
Stat of the Game
72 - CSKA's field-goal percentage from inside the arc.
Quotes
Krasny Oktyabr head coach Kirill Bolshakov:
- You could tell the difference in class. It became even more pronounced when we found out that Jefferson wouldn't be able to help us in Moscow. CSKA went inside for the first five minutes, which led to foul trouble for our only big man Ibekwe. After that, CSKA had total dominance under the basket. Congratulations to our opponent on the win.
CSKA head coach Dimitris Itoudis:
- Congratulations to the team on another win. The two teams' difference in quality was evident and we capitalized on our advantage. One of our biggest challenges was spreading out the playing time. We'll continue to work and prepare for upcoming games.
