CSKA Ends Zenit's Perfect Start

CSKA Moscow defeated Zenit St. Petersburg at home, 113-77. The Army Men set the tone in the 1st quarter, dominating from start to finish. The reigning champions deal Zenit its first loss of the season and move into 1st place in the standings.

The league's top two teams met in the Game of the Week in Moscow. Zenit entered with a 7-0 record, while CSKA boasted a 7-1 mark and had an opportunity to knock Vasily Karasev's men from their perch atop the standings.

After a slow start on offense for both teams, CSKA started to pull away thanks to suffocating defense and relentless offense. The Army Men limited Zenit to 12 points in the first 10 minutes, while scoring 30, to take a commanding 18-point lead.

Zenit's defense improved in the 2nd quarter. The visitors started to find their rhythm, matching CSKA at both ends of the floor. Zenit even got within eight at one point in the first half, but Cory Higgins helped the Army Men regain the momentum entering the locker room, scoring nine points in the final five minutes to give CSKA a 50-36 lead.

Zenit's defense had no answers in the second half for the home team. CSKA exploded for 36 points in the 3rd quarter, leading by 26 entering the final period. The Army Men went on to score 113, handing Zenit its first loss of the season. CSKA improves to 8-1, all alone in 1st place.

Vitaly Fridzon. The Army Men's sniper hadn't made a big impact in recent games, but he flourished against Zenit, scoring 19 points on perfect shooting from the field to go with two rebounds, two steals and only one turnover.
