Timma showed no mercy to his former team

In a Regular Season game in St. Petersburg Zenit defeated VEF from Latvia – 91:76. The home team went on a decisive run after the half-time break and never relinquished their advantage.

The Plot
VEF debuted with two losses at home this season, but the young team showed plenty of potential and desire to fight. A trip to St. Petersburg and a date with an old friend Janis Timma would become yet another test for them.

Janis would have to wait for his turn, because Ryan Toolson and Yevgeny Valiev scored the team’s first 13 point and helped to build a comfortable lead. As the quarter progressed so did Zenit’s defense, and by the end of the period they led by double digits.

Great individual play from a 19-year old Swede Ludwig Hakanson sparked the visiting team. After a couple of deep bombs they were only trailing by three.

VEF couldn’t capitalize on their success, as the aforementioned Janis Timma and Kyle Landry took turns scoring 17 of their team’s points in the third quarter. The scoring exhibition they’ve put on included a shot of every variety: mid-range jumpers, threes, alley-oops. By the time the fourth quarter started Zenit already eliminated the intrigue in terms of the game’s winner. Vasily Karasev’s team became the first squad with a 3/0 record in the League this year.

TheHero
Ryan Toolson. An American guard became a truly valuable find for Zenit. It seemed as if he was a part of every play on the floor as he once again got within a reach of a triple-double. In 32 minutes played Toolson registered 17 points (50% FGs, 50% 3PFG), 8 rebounds, 9 assists, commited just 2 turnovers and had no fouls. Once again he made a strong case for a Player of the Week award.

The Number
6 – Zenit’s total turnovers is so far one of the best results in the League.
