Avtodor overpowered Kalev
In a Regular Season game at home Russian Avtodor defeated Kalev from Estonia - 68:60. The game was even for the most part, with neither team able to build a significant advantage until the fourth quarter. That’s when Avtodor stepped up their defense and Yevgeny Kolesnikov came through as a scorer in the clutch, helping his team to get the lead and eventually win the game.
The Plot.
Kalev’s players knew that they were in for a tough ballgame as they traveled to Saratov, because Avtodor had two very strong outings in their previous two games – a win over Nizhny and a tough close loss to title favorites Khimki.
Allar Varrak’s team tried to take away Avtodor’s advantages, they slowed the pace down and denied any fast break opportunities. Avtodor had to work for every point either in the paint or from the line, as the game became a battle in the trenches and promised to continue to be a low-scoring affair - 37:30 was the score at halftime.
After the break Kalev’s three-point specialists troubled Avtodor’s defense and helped to cut away at the lead, Gregor Arbet was especially successful. Their efforts were answered by Yevgeny Kolesnikov who also caught fire, but the game was decided by Avtodor’s discipline on defense in the 4th quarter.
Yevgeny Kolesnikov. Saratov’s guard took the game over when the score was close and the game could go either way. He scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and led all scorers.
